Government plans to tighten building management after Tai Po fire

Secretary for Home and Youth Affairs Alice Mak said on Sunday the government plans to amend building management legislations. The proposal came after a deadly fire broke out at Tai Po's Wang Fuk Court last November, killing more than 160 people.
Wang Fuk Court was under a large-scale renovation when the blaze broke out. Since the tragedy, society has shown concern about the city's building renovation and property management through owners' corporations.
Secretary for Home and Youth Affairs Alice Mak said the government would propose amendments to the Building Management Ordinance, including strengthening the power of regulatory authorities. But she said they would not consider abolishing the proxy votes at this stage.
Mak explained that some home owners might need a representative to attend owners' corporation's meetings because of their age or they had moved abroad. She added that the bureau would submit the proposal to the Legislative Council on Monday.
Speaking of Wang Fuk Court's existing administrator, Hop On Management Company, Mak said a handover process is happening between the firm and the complex's former management team.
