Guangzhou low-altitude aircraft tech firms tap HK as a launchpad

Guangzhou-based technology companies are strengthening their collaboration with Hong Kong. As the low-altitude economy is taking off, a mainland company is planning to bring an unmanned passenger-carrying aircraft to Hong Kong for a test flight at the end of this month.

Meanwhile, another tech company is deepening its AI cooperation with MTR to improve railway safety and efficiency.

Helicopters taking off might be common, but take a closer look, this aircraft has no pilot.

This unmanned passenger-carrying aircraft is developed by Guangzhou-based company EHang. It can carry two passengers and fly at an altitude of 120 metres for about half an hour. Equipped with automatic navigation, it can complete flights as long as a route is set, with no need for a pilot.

A first flight ceremony will be held in Hong Kong at the end of this month. The company's vice president says Hong Kong has advantages in formulating air traffic rules, and there are many application opportunities, such as logistics and personnel transfer between islands.

Technology is not limited to crafts in the sky but also those that run through the ground.

Another Guangzhou company, PCI Technology Group, which launched QR code fare payment services for the MTR in 2020, says it is in discussions with MTR to expand cooperation, including using AI systems to prevent train malfunctions and power supply failures.

Similar technology has already been applied in Guangzhou, enhancing the passenger experience while reducing operating costs by 20 to 30 percent.

This year, PCI Technology Group has also set up a research and development centre in Hong Kong Science Park, hoping to expand south Asian and African markets by leveraging Hong Kong's international advantages.
