The US proposes slapping double-digit tariffs on products from dozens of Washington's trading partners, after an investigation into imports of good allegedly made with forced labour.
16 economies, including Canada, Mexico and the European Union, would face 10% levies for allegedly failing to enforce bans on forced labour.
This while 44 trading partners, including the Chinese Mainland, Hong Kong and Japan, would be hit with 12.5% import taxes.
China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said on Wednesday that the country opposes all forms of unilateral tariff measures, and that a trade war serves no one's interest.
She further denied there is forced labour in China, and that Beijing opposes using it as an excuse to engage in political manipulation.
