A man convicted of trying to assassinate President Donald Trump on a Florida golf course in 2024 has been sentenced to life in prison.

Ryan Routh, in the blue jacket, shown taking part in a rally in Kyiv, Ukraine in April 2022, paying tribute to foreign citizens killed during the war with Russia.

On Wednesday, US District Judge Aileen Cannon pronounced Routh's fate in the same Fort Pierce courtroom that erupted into chaos in September.

That was when Routh tried to stab himself shortly after jurors found him guilty of trying to kill a presidential candidate and other charges.

Prosecutors asked for life without parole, saying Routh is unrepentant and has never apologised.

A defence attorney brought in for his sentencing asked for 27 years, noting that Routh is already turning 60.
