Crowds filled the narrow streets in the Old Quarter of Hanoi on Sunday as families shopped for flowers, festive foods and bright red decorations ahead of the Lunar New Year, known locally as Tet. The celebration marks the arrival of spring on the lunar calendar and it is a time for family reunions, honoring ancestors and welcoming good fortune. In the days leading up to the holiday, residents and visitors streamed through the century-old Hang Luoc traditional Tet market. Decorations prominently feature horses, the zodiac animal associated with the coming year. Shoppers examined gold-embossed calligraphy, red envelopes for lucky money and paper cutouts shaped like galloping horses, symbols of strength and perseverance.
