The Transport and Logistics Bureau will convert 15 road intersections into diagonal pedestrian crossings this year, reducing the pedestrian distance and crossing time by approximately 30 percent.
The intersection of Ngan Shing Street and Chap Wai Kon Street next to the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sha Tin, is one of the selected sites to be transformed into a diagonal pedestrian crossing.
The location connects the bus terminus, the MTR station and the hospital's main entrance. Many pedestrians prefer taking a shortcut out of convenience.
This woman said people don't see the railing as a deterrent, with many choosing to take the shortcut especially between 5 and 6 p.m. when visiting the hospital.
While this woman said that if diagonal crossings are designated, everyone would support the measure.
This as the Transport and Logistics Bureau earlier tested diagonal pedestrian crossings at two intersections in Tsim Sha Tsui and Shatin.
Their latest proposal aims to expand the arrangement to 15 intersections.
The measures are proposed to be implemented at Kennedy Town and North Point on Hong Kong Island.
Five will be in Kowloon including Cheung Sha Wan, To Kwa Wan and Kwun Tong.
Another eight will be located in the New Territories, distributed throughout areas such as Tuen Mun, Fanling, Tai Po and Tseung Kwan O.
The measures are expected to be completed in phases throughout this year.
Secretary for Transport and Logistics Mable Chan said adjustments have to be made for the pedestrian traffic light.
Data indicated that the pedestrian crossing distance and time at the 15 sites will be reduced by 30 percent on average.
