Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Rosanna Law commends Hong Kong tennis star Coleman Wong, whose performance in the U.S. Open marked the best result for a Hong Kong player in a Grand Slam men's singles event.
Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Rosanna Law: "This financial year, we have earmarked an estimated 9.2 billion Hong Kong dollars for sports which is more than double the figure from a decade ago. This substantial investment underscores our dedication to cultivating a dynamic sports industry in Hong Kong for more events, more world number ones, and more history-making performances, such as what Coleman Wong did at the U.S. Open."
The sports and tourism chief also reveals Hong Kong received 5.15 million visitors in August, up 16 percent year-on-year. Over the first eight months of this year, tourist numbers also rose 12 percent, reaching 33 million.
She says the government is confident the figure can reach 49 million.
