The Water Supplies Department unveils a pipeline robotics lab established alongside a mainland tech company.

That's to develop robotic technology capable of inspecting water pipes, aiming to detect leaks more efficiently.

In the past six months, multipe districts saw burst pipes including a major incident in Tuen Mun in late May that disrupted water supply for around 200,000 residents.

The Water Supplies Department's new lab develops a robotic device that can be deployed into underground pipes with onboard sensors to scan and detect leakage noises. Exact locations of leaks can be pinpointed.

The robot is also designed to overcome limitations such as complicated pipe networks in Hong Kong and background sounds that traditionally hampered leakage detection.
