Government issues first taxi fleet licence to SynCab

The Transport Department has issued the first taxi fleet licence to SynCab.
The licence has a fixed term of five years with the vehicles officially entering into service today.
As of now, the Syncab taxi fleet consists of only 160 vehicles.
Hong Kong saw its first taxi fleet acquiring its licence after more than a year of preparation.
SynCab, which operates a fleet of some 160 vehicles, is easily identifiable with these markers placed on the front and back of its taxis.
Certificates are also attached to the windshields of the taxis.
In a bid to facilitate more payment options, the SynCab fleet is equipped with various digital payment platforms.
Residents have the option to either hail a taxi on the street or book a ride online beforehand, while drivers can customise the charge for each ride.
A dynamic charging system also applies to different time slots and vehicle types.
SynCab Founder Sonia Cheng stressed drivers of the company's taxi fleet must receive full training before they can start working.
She added that the company utilises big data for analytics on its ride-hailing platform.
TVB News tried to hail a SynCab taxi on its ride-hailing platform at the Science Park earlier today.
A two-minute-long ride charged us 80 dollars, while a traditional taxi only charges 26 dollars for a similar ride.
The platform also required us to pay before the arrival of the taxi.
We waited for 20 minutes without any vehicles accepting the ride request, but the platform already indicated that the order was completed.
Meanwhile, Secretary for Transport and Logistics Mable Chan said authorities hope to improve the image of the taxi sector with the gradual operation of more taxi fleets.
She noted that around 80 parking areas designated for taxi fleets have already been set up at 13 locations including the airport, boundary-crossing checkpoints and the West Kowloon MTR Station.
