Transport Ministry officials in Japan attended a ceremony to mark the beginning of construction on a third runway at Narita Airport in Tokyo.
The main aim is to expand capacity and it should be ready by March 2029. By that year, Narita and Haneda Airport, the two main airports serving the Japanese capital, should be able to accommodate one million passengers annually.
The almost five-billion U.S. dollar construction project at Narita will see a 3,500 metre runway built and the 2,500-metre runway B extended by 1,000 metres to match the length of the new runway under construction.
International travellers using Narita exceeded 20 million in 2024. Narita's President Akihiko Tamura predicts demand for air travel will double in the next 20 years with the Asia-Pacific region "growing faster than most other regions."
