Huanggang Port was packed with northbound travellers until the early morning after several large-scale concerts held in the city.

Responding to the huge crowds, the Transport Department says it will continue implementing special traffic arrangements to facilitate cross-border travel for concert-goers returning to the mainland.

Footage from mainland social media platforms show revellers that remained stuck at Huanggang Port late into the night, with some concert-goers saying that many of them were still waiting for cross-border buses at 3 a.m. Motorists were not exempt from the effects of the crowded scene.

This after a number of large-scale concerts were organised at Kai Tak Sports Park, the Hong Kong Coliseum and AsiaWorld-Expo throughout the weekend.

Some mainland visitors attending a concert at the Kai Tak venue stressed the crowded border was not much of a concern.

This tourist said she wasn't worried about the long queues at the border, adding that she can wait until the next morning, while this woman said she would prefer to stay overnight in the city after hearing about the crowd situation at Huanggang Port.

Hong Kong Tourism Association Executive Director Timothy Chui,a former hotel CEO, noted many low-end to mid-range hotels in the city saw high rates of occupancy over the past two days owing to the influx of concert revellers.

He believes the Huanggang cross-boundary buses can strengthen their services especially for routes going between the city centre and Lok Ma Chau.

Chui also proposed that the Hong Kong government communicate with the mainland about the possibility of permitting 24-hour cross-border services at some checkpoints during special occasions.

Meanwhile, the Transport Department stated that the concert held at Kai Tak Sports Park ended later than previously arranged, with authorities reminding concert-goers to reserve time for making transfers to the MTR's East Rail Line for departure via the Lo Wu Control Point.
