The newly amended Companies Ordinance has come into effect. The government says applications are open for companies that want to re-domicile in Hong Kong.

Insurance company AXA said it would be coming to Hong Kong from Bermuda.

Under the newly amended ordinance, companies outside Hong Kong can apply to the Companies Registry if they wish to re-domicile in the city.

Applicants for domiciliation must fulfil certain requirements. After the move, the Hong Kong government will provide unilateral tax credits, with no double taxation arrangements.

International insurance company AXA said it would re-domicile to Hong Kong from Bermuda.

Christopher Hui, Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury, said he is glad companies are coming to Hong Kong.

He said authorities hope the approval process can be completed in two weeks.

An accountant and tax expert said the amended ordinance would attract more than a hundred enterprises to re-domicile to Hong Kong.

"Hong Kong has signed tax treaties with more than 50 jurisdictions," said Stanley Ho, Tax Partner at KPMG, China. "The benefit of a tax treaty is that you can avoid double taxation. By re-domiciliating an overseas company to Hong Kong, they could take the advantage of the double-tax treaty, which is a tool for them to save (on) taxes."
