U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday hinted that tariffs on imported Chinese goods could be eased with the two countries set to hold trade talks over the weekend.

In a media event to announce a tariff deal with the U.K. on Thursday, U.S. President Donald Trump suggested that levies imposed on Chinese imports may be lowered.

U.S. President Donald Trump: "Well, it could be. I mean, we are going to see right now. You can't get any higher. It's at 145, so we know it's coming down. I think we will have a very good relationship. You know, I always get along with President Xi."

The tariff talks will be held in Switzerland this weekend, with the Chinese team led by Vice Premier He Lifeng set to meet with U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and others.

Donald Trump: "I think it will be a very friendly meeting. They look forward to doing it in an elegant way. I think that we are going to have a good weekend with China. They have a lot to gain. I do think they have far more to gain than we do."

Citing sources, the New York Post said the U.S. may slash tariffs on Chinese goods by 50 to 54 percent. The White House said the report was based on speculation, adding all tariff-related decisions would come from the president.
