Scores of passengers were stuck at the Lok Ma Chau MTR Station last night after the station's QR code system broke down owing to an internet connection problem.
The MTR said additional routers have been installed in the station after it contacted the internet service provider, which doubled the wifi capacity on the premises.
Online footage showed large crowds flooding Lok Ma Chau Station's platforms yesterday.
The chaotic situation was compounded by the lack of functioning escalators, forcing many to depart the station by walking up the stairs.
This mainland tourist said the queues were far shorter over at the Futian Port, but he along with several others were blocked by police at Lok Ma Chau for more than an hour.
The MTR explained that the station's QR code system could not work because of the facility's wifi being unable to handle the surge in passengers on Friday.
In an attempt to clear the crowds, passengers were permitted to exit the station gates without paying with their cards for 45 minutes, starting at around 10 p.m. last night.
Extra routers were installed in the station after the MTR contacted its internet service provider, which doubled the wifi capacity.
This mainland visitor said she was initially worried after finding out about the crowd situation via mainland social media platform Xiaohongshu, but was pleased to see far fewer people in the station today.
This as some experts noted the station's internet capacity must be increased with the help of both the installation of a wifi receiver and assistance from the internet service provider.
Hong Kong Information Technology Federation Honorary President Francis Fong gave an analogy, comparing the internet traffic to that of lanes in a cross-harbour tunnel, stressing the wider the tunnel is, or if there are more lanes, the faster the internet will be.
Fong further added that tourists should ensure that their own mobile network is active when using the QR code system while accessing MTR stations.
