White House officials have sent mixed messages over whether there are tariff discussions between Beijing and Washington. While the U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said they are yet to start negotiations, the country's agriculture chief asserted that the two sides maintained daily contact.

Bessent said in an ABC interview on Sunday that he had interaction with his Chinese counterparts last week during the spring meetings of the International Monetary Fund. Bessent stressed their conversations did not cover the tariff issue, but were more on financial stability and global economic early warnings. He said he doesn't think either side believes the current tariff levels are sustainable, reiterating that he did not know if U.S. President Donald Trump had spoken to President Xi Jinping.

Separately on Sunday, U.S. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins told CNN that the Trump administration was holding daily conversations with 100 countries, including China, regarding tariffs and trade. Rollins suggested trade deals will be made soon.
