Powerful Typhoon Jangmi, the sixth typhoon of this year, is making its closest approach to the southernmost Japan prefecture of Okinawa with strong intensity.

Heavy rain and high winds are battering Naha City as the tropical storm swept north toward the main island of Okinawa in the morning.

Power outages and disruptions in transportation have been reported and major airlines in Japan already cancelled a series of flights scheduled to and from Okinawa over the next two days.

The country's weather authorities forecast the typhoon will pass through Okinawa's main island tonight and then veer towards the Amami region on Tuesday before shifting eastward.

Kanto region including Tokyo is expected to see downpours on Wednesday.
