Gov't held ceremony to mourn victims of Tai Po fire

The fire at Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po has claimed 128 lives and injured 83. Some 200 people remain missing.

The Hong Kong SAR Government held a moment of silence this morning outside the Government Headquarters to mourn the victims of the fire. The government will also fly its flag at half-mast for three days starting today.

The ceremony was held in the morning at the East Wing Forecourt of the Government Headquarters.

The national anthem was played and the flag was raised first. The flag was then flown at half-mast in mourning.

Chief Executive John Lee, Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in Hong Kong Zhou Ji, Xu Qifang, Deputy Director of the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the Central People's Government, and Nong Rong, who came to Hong Kong to assist in disaster relief work, were present.

Senior officials observed three minutes of silence for the victims of the fire.

A large number of residents went to the Government Headquarters to participate in the memorial service. Some residents expressed their condolence.

The Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in Hong Kong also lowered its flag to half-mast in mourning.
