HK Government tightens standards to eliminate notorious rental bedspace apartments

The government tightens the legal requirements for rental bedspace apartments, in a bid to phase out bedspace of poor quality in the city.

The amendment calls for the bed to be at least 80 centimeters wide and maintain a minimum distance of 75 centimeters between mattress and the ceiling.

Loft bed elevated over 70 centimeters high off the ground, has to be equipped with a ladder.

For safety reason, the bunk bed shall not obstruct fire sprinklers and fire alarm system.

The new requirements apply to new license applications or annual renewal.
