The new Huanggang port experienced congestion after midnight for two consecutive days.

Experts blamed high traffic volume and the design of the pickup area in Shenzhen for the tailback.

The new Huanggang port, the only land crossing to Shenzhen open after midnight, saw heavy traffic jams for two nights in a row.

Multiple large-scale events took place over the weekend, including Halloween festivities and a concert at Kai Tak Sports Park, attracting many mainland tourists.

Police stated on social media early Monday morning that traffic towards the port was very busy.

Vehicles waited an average of 25 minutes to reach the drop-off zone.

At the cross-border bus terminus in Mong Kok, fewer people queued up Sunday night when compared to Saturday night, but operators still increased bus frequencies.

Many seven-seater vehicles waited at the buffer zone near the port.

Experts analysed the traffic over the past two days, which backed up from the port building to the San Tin Highway.

Some vehicles were stuck at the five-in-one checkpoint, while others were delayed at the Shenzhen pickup area.

Hong Kong Automobile Association Honorary Life President Ringo Lee said delays occurred when facial recognition or checkpoint machines malfunctioned.

He suggested deploying temporary staff to speed up checks.

Security Panel Chairman Peter Shiu said after-midnight traffic was three to four times higher than usual over the past two days.

He suggested visitors stay an extra day to spend and enjoy Hong Kong instead of waiting hours to cross the border during holidays.

He also urged authorities to monitor traveler numbers and consider extending the operating hours of other border crossings if congestion persists.
