Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was re-elected on Sunday following a chaotic election night, securing 51.8% of the total vote, but opponent Flavio Bolsonaro challenged the results and called for the election to be "annulled."
With 100% of the ballots counted, electoral officials announced that Lula held a lead of nearly 4.4 million votes over his opponent, Bolsonaro.
However, the announcement capped an evening of disruption at polling stations after a late decision extended voting by two hours.
Bolsonaro refused to concede defeat, declaring: "These elections should have been annulled, given the circumstances under which these events unfolded," and vowed to challenge the results.
