Opposition presidential candidate Sen. Flávio Bolsonaro held his final campaign event Saturday in Rio de Janeiro, making a last push to mobilize supporters just one day before Brazil votes in the first round of its presidential election.

The vote comes at the end of a polarized campaign pitting incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva against Bolsonaro, the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, who is serving a prison sentence for attempting a coup.

Flávio Bolsonaro is seeking to return his father's political movement to power amid a broader shift to the right across Latin America.

Twelve candidates are on the presidential ballot, but Lula and Bolsonaro are the leading contenders.

If no candidate receives more than 50% of valid votes on Sunday, the top two will advance to a runoff on Oct. 25.

Bolsonaro, 45, is competing in his first presidential race, while Lula, 80, is seeking a fourth nonconsecutive term and is running in his seventh presidential election.

The two leading candidates represent opposing sides of Brazil's political spectrum and offer sharply different approaches on issues ranging from tackling organized crime to the country's relationship with the Trump administration.
