A fire devastated the Eagle's Nest retreat built for Adolf Hitler in southern Germany. Local authorities have arrested one person so far.

Located in the Bavarian Alps, the retreat, also known as Kehlsteinhaus, was almost completely destroyed in the blaze. The local tourism sector said it was unsure whether parts of the damaged building could be saved.

German police said the building's fire alarm went off at around 9:15 p.m. on Friday, and was already engulfed in flames by the time of their arrival. No injuries have been reported so far.

Local authorities have detained one person but it has yet to be determined whether they are involved with the fire. The Kehlsteinhaus was completed in 1938 and has operated as a cafe and restaurant since 1952.
