The Centre for Health Protection reported the death of a 12-year-old girl who tested positive for influenza A.
The girl was not vaccinated and was previously in healthy condition.
She began developing symptoms such as fever, coughing, diarrhoea and vomiting last Saturday, before her condition worsened on Monday.
The girl sought treatment at Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital's A&E department where she suffered from a cardiac arrest.
She was subsequently resuscitated and transferred to the paediatric intensive care unit.
Lab testing later confirmed the girl contracted influenza A.
She died on Tuesday after her infection was complicated by septic shock and multiorgan failure.
