Observatory says T3 signal is unlikely as Saudel continues to weaken

The Standby Signal No.1 is still in force. The Hong Kong Observatory says the chance of issuing the Strong Wind Signal No.3 is low as tropical depression Saudel continues to weaken.

Saudel made an uncommon return as a tropical depression after it made a landfall in Zhejiang province. While Hong Kong's Standby Signal No.1 remains in effect, the Observatory on Thursday says it is unlikely it will upgrade it to a higher signal.

At 6pm, Saudel was estimated to be about 290 kilometres northeast of Hong Kong and is forecast to move west-southwest at about 12 kilometres an hour across the inland areas of eastern Guangdong.

Acting Senior Scientific Officer, Shum Chi-tai, says "According to the present forecast, Saudel will move across the inland areas of eastern Guangdong tonight and at first tomorrow, edging closer to the vicinity of the Pearl River Estuary. However, it is expected to weaken relatively quickly and the chance of strong wind prevailing generally over Hong Kong is not high. The chance of issuing the Strong Wind Signal No.3 is rather low."

Meanwhile, Saudel made its third landfall in Zhangzhou, Fujian province on Thursday morning. Heavy rainfall flooded local streets. Local authorities suspended schools, work and business activities.

This video shows some people are collecting floating shoes in Zhejiang after Saudel reportedly to have flooded several shoe factories.

A school is completely flooded in Wenzhou city, trapping at least 2,500 students and teachers. Authorities deploy drones to deliver aid to the stranded individuals.
