HK female tourist killed; 5 injured in Hokkaido rental car crash

A 53-year-old Hong Kong woman has been killed and five others injured after a rental car carrying Hong Kong tourists collided head-on with another vehicle in Japan's Hokkaido.

The case has marked the second serious self-driving accident involving Hong Kong visitors in the region within five days.

The crash unfolded at around 3 pm on Sunday (July 20) in the Gakuden Sanku Area of Furano City.

According to Japanese police, the rental car was driven by a 52-year-old Hong Kong man. The victim, identified as a 53-year-old woman, was sitting in the front passenger seat and was pronounced dead after being taken to hospital.

Two teenage girls were also in the rental car, and police believe the four occupants were members of the same family.

The collision also injured the two passengers of the other vehicle, bringing the total number of those affected to six.
