Pakistan's military is vowing to retaliate as security forces foil a brazen bomb and gunfire attack launched by militants in Karachi.
The incident left at least three members of paramilitary Rangers force dead and four others injured, marking the city's first major terrorist attack since 2024.
A loud explosion and gunfire were reported along a major road near several universities and the country's meteorological department on Saturday.
Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, a breakaway faction of the Pakistani Taliban which claims responsibility, says its members detonated an explosive at the entrance of the Rangers camp.
According to local media, a militant rammed an explosives-laden vehicle and triggered an intense exchange of gunfire with security forces.
Three troops and more than three militants were reportedly killed in the crossfire and the ensuing shootout, reports say.
It is the most significant attack in Karachi since a blast targeting a Chinese convoy in October 2024, which killed two Chinese nationals.
