US President Donald Trump said Wednesday negotiations with Iran are going "very well" and told reporters a deal could happen "over the weekend."

Speaking in the Oval Office, Trump downplayed the idea that US and Iranian strikes are testing the fragile ceasefire.

Trump also insisted that ongoing negotiations to extend the temporary ceasefire and open new nuclear talks with Tehran continue to progress, suggesting it's possible an agreement could be reached "over the weekend."

Trump, however, has been predicting for weeks that the two sides are on the cusp of reaching a deal.

And in his first public comments since the Justice Department said a controversial $1.8 billion anti-weaponisation fund would not go forward, the president said he didn't know if the fund was dead or merely on hold.
