Tehran bombs US targets in Jordan after oil tankers came under attack

The US military says it destroyed five Iranian crude oil tankers following attacks on a US warship by Iran's Revolutionary Guard.

Following the latest American strikes, Iran launches missiles toward US targets in Jordan and says it had captured one of the US military's unmanned underwater vessels at the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz.

US Central Command said the US military struck the tankers on Tuesday after the Iranian Revolutionary Guards targeted a US Navy warship with ballistic missiles twice over the past two days.

The US warship successfully evaded the attempted Iranian attacks and continued to patrol regional waters, no American personnel were harmed," it said in a statement.

It said the Iranian tankers destroyed on Tuesday were the Kivik, Charminar, Horizon 1 and the Riesco in the Gulf of Oman. It said the US military also destroyed the vessel Derya, which was located near Kharg Island in the Strait of Hormuz.

The statement said the crews of the five vessels were told to abandoned ship before the attacks.

Iranian state television also reported the US strikes, saying US forces attacked Iranian oil tankers near the southern port of Jask and near Kharg Island in the Persian Gulf. It said the crews were evcuated.

Iranian missiles were intercepted in the sky of Mafraq city, 70 kilometres north of the Jordanian capital Amman early Wednesday.

Iran said it had captured one of the US military's unmanned underwater vessels at the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz at dawn, Iranian state television reported.

The strategic waterway has been a key pressure point for Iran, and reopening it fully has become one of the prime goals for the US administration.

The US has been trying to escort ships through the strait, protecting them from Iranian missile and drone attacks.
