The Pentagon on Friday released an unclassified version of its 2026 National Defence Strategy, or NDS, placing defence of the US homeland and its interests across the Western Hemisphere above all other military priorities, including China.
The strategy signals a shift in US military commitments overseas, saying it will offer "more limited" support to allies and urging them to assume greater responsibility for regional security, including its support for Ukraine.
The NDS said it is "Europe's responsibility first and foremost" to end the four-year-old Russia-Ukraine conflict.
The NDS is issued once per administration and sets military priorities for a president's term.
