58-year-old man dies in Peng Chau swimming competition

A 58-year-old man drowns while taking part in the Peng Chau Round Island Swim.

He dies after emergency treatment at the hospital.

The man is airlifted to Eastern Hospital by the Government Flying Service.

He requires resuscitation using an automated chest compression machine.

The incident happened at around 12 noon.

Police say the man was participating in a swimming competition and drowned in the waters off Lung Mo Temple in Peng Chau.

According to the organizer's information, the race consists of three distances, a 5.5-kilometre round-island, a 3.4-kilometre half-island, and a 1.7-kilometre route.

Participants are required to pass a swimming trial before the race.
