Trump signs US-Denmark-Greenland security agreement

US President Donald Trump signed an agreement with Denmark and Greenland aimed at strengthening Arctic and North Atlantic security according to the parties, easing tensions over his repeated calls for Greenland to become part of the US.

Under the wide-ranging security agreement, the United States will be allowed to modernise and expand its activities at the Pituffik Space Base it already operates in remote northwestern Greenland, and establish an additional defence area at Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig.

The deal also permits US aircraft to fly over and land in any territory in Greenland, including its territorial waters.

The agreement states that no state that is not a member of NATO "shall be allowed to establish its own manned or unmanned military installations" in Greenland.

The document reaffirms "the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark" and recognises that the people of Greenland have the "right to self-determination."

Trump, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, and Jens-Frederik Nielsen, Greenland's prime minister, all heralded the deal.
