The carcass of a humpback whale whose life and death captivated Germans for months has been dragged onto a Danish beach after spending two

weeks in shallow waters off the island of Anholt.

The whale, nicknamed "Timmy" by German media, drew widespread attention after it was first spotted off Germany's Baltic Sea coast in March.

The whale was found dead mid May after becoming stranded near Anholt in the Kattegat, the strait between Denmark

and Sweden that connects the

Baltic Sea and the North Sea.

Two German millionaires privately funnelled

millions in an attempt to guide

it back toward its natural habitat in the Atlantic Ocean.

The whale was later transported on a barge toward the North Sea in a final attempt to return its natural habitat.

It remains unclear why the whale entered the Baltic Sea, which is outside its normal habitat. Some experts have

suggested it may have become disoriented while following a shoal of herring or during

migration.
