US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said a peace deal with Iran could still take a few days to be negotiated, re-affirming the US's demands about the Strait of Hormuz.

This comes as US Central Command said it had carried out fresh strikes designed "to protect American troops from threats posed by Iranian forces."

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said negotiating a deal with Iran "could take a few days." Rubio said the US would give diplomacy every chance to succeed before considering whether to deal with Iran in "another way."

He said "there is no country in the world that's in favour of a tolling system in the Strait of Hormuz, except the regime in Iran. So that's not acceptable, that cannot happen, the straits need to be open, unimpeded, without tolls."

Rubio said: "Well look, I think our position is well-stated, the president (US President Donald Trump) had a very important, I think historic, call just a couple days ago with a number of leaders from the region. I think there's strong alignment and agreement on what a preliminary draft should look like. I think, like anything, with something like this it's going to take a couple days to settle on even down to the disagreements over a word, sentence."

"So we'll have to work through that. If there's going to be a deal we're going to have to work through that. But this is, you know, it's either going to be a good deal or there isn't going to be one."

Despite a ceasefire in place since early April, US Central Command said it had carried out fresh strikes designed "to protect American troops from threats posed by Iranian forces."

Iran said it had downed a "hostile" stealth drone using a new air defence system, Iranian news agencies reported, without saying where it had come from.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said Tehran "has no timetable for finalising a potential deal with the US as negotiations continue over ending the war." He said "the sooner a conclusion that would secure Iran's national rights and interests can be reached, the better."

Meanwhile, Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid criticised the peace deal negotiations. Lapid, who is part of an alliance attempting to unseat Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in upcoming elections said the deal means two things.

He said "first, that this will not be the last round of war and second, that Netanyahu has failed to achieve every single one of the war's objectives as he himself defined them."

Elsewhere, US President Donald Trump honoured fallen service members during a Memorial Day ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery.

Trump mentioned Iran at the ceremony paying tribute to the 13 US service members killed during Operation Epic Fury.

Trump said, "In Operation Epic Fury, we lost 13 wonderful souls, wonderful, special people. These incredible men and women gave their lives to ensure that the world's number one state sponsor of terror will never have a nuclear weapon. Oh, and they won't. They will never have a nuclear weapon. I'm sure you. I'm sure you know that."
