Lai Ka-ying, the first astronaut from the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, has been selected as a payload specialist for the Shenzhou 23 spaceflight mission, the China Manned Space Agency said on Saturday.

Lai joined the space programme in August in 2024, and has completed over 200 training programmes. She passed the assessment with excellent results.

Shenzhou 23 will take off at 23.08 on Sunday from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre in northwest China.

Lai is a senior police officer in Hong Kong, and is also a computer security expert with a Ph.D. degree from the University Hong Kong.

Lai will join two astronauts Zhu Yangzhu and Zhang Zhiyuan for the mission.

Shenzhou is a planned Chinese spaceflight to the Tiangong space station. It is planned to carry three astronauts on board a Shenzhou spacecraft.
