It's International Sherlock Holmes Day honouring the birthday of the writer and creator of Sherlock Holmes, Arthur Conan Doyle who was born May 22nd 1859.
Sherlock Holmes, for over 100 years, seems to be able to proliferate, keep going, keep producing new versions, none of which can ever be definitive, but all of which can coexist quite happily. When we were doing Sherlock the first time, at the very beginning, the Robert Downey Jr. films were coming out at the same time, and we thought, oh God, oh brilliant-we're up against a Hollywood blockbuster, that's fantastic. And then I spoke to the producers of that film, and we realised we actually helped each other. The mere presence of two Sherlocks at the same time was not a problem.
In London, the enduring appeal of Sherlock Holmes can be seen at 221B Baker Street. It's home to the Sherlock Holmes Museum and draws visitors from around the world since opening in 1990. It is also his fictional address. Holmes, according to the stories lived here between 1881 and 1904 sharing the residence with Dr. Watson, his loyal companion and chronicler.
