The US and Iran are taking opposing stances over Tehran's uranium stockpile and controls over the Strait of Hormuz.

US President Donald Trump says the US will eventually recover Iran's stockpile of highly enriched uranium, claiming "we don't want it, we'll probably destroy it after we get it, but we're not going to let them get it."

Trump also says he is against Iran's control of the Strait of Hormuz as "we want it open, we want it free."

However, two senior Iranian sources told Reuters before Trump's comments that Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei has issued a directive that the uranium should not be sent abroad.

Iranian officials also restated on Thursday Tehran's claim to sovereignty over the Strait.
