Samsung Electronics wins a partial injunction against its labour union in South Korea ahead of what could be the largest strike in the tech giant's history.

This after the first-round of negotiations over pay and bonuses collapsed last week. Over 45,000 workers are threatening to walk out for 18 days from Thursday if their demands are not met.

The decision by the Suwon District Court on Monday orders the union to ensure any strike did not lead to the degradation of materials used in production, while operations in key areas, such as semiconductor, and safety protection facilities must be kept running at normal levels.

A court spokesman says each of the two main unions could face fines of 72,000 US dollars per day if they fail to comply.

Seoul is raising the possibility of invoking its emergency arbitration powers to prevent a strike at Samsung which risks damaging economic fallout. South Korean President Lee Jae Myung stresses equal respect for labour and management rights.

Media reports say government-mediated negotiations between the company and the union are due to continue until Tuesday.
