A 5.2-magnitude earthquake in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region's Liuzhou city kills at least two people. This as the Hong Kong Observatory receives more than 10 local reports of tremors being felt in the city that lasted for several seconds. The initial tremors began at 12:21 a.m. when CCTV footage in Liuzhou captured scores of local residents leaving their homes and dashing for safety in open areas. This woman says she was jolted awake by the tremors and saw the fan shaking inside her room, while this man says the earthquake was strong enough to shatter his windows. A number of residential structures tumbled as a result of the quake, with local emergency, fire services and police departments promptly starting rescue efforts. Mainland authorities noted at least three people were reported to be missing. Rescue personnel subsequently found three individuals with two of them confirmed deceased, while a 91-year-old resident in stable condition was rescued. Another four people are injured and sent to hospital for treatment, and some 7,000 people are transferred to a safer location. The epicentre of the quake is located in the city's Liunan district, with a depth of 8 km. Tan Jinxian, a senior earthquake engineer in Guangxi, says Liuzhou is located between two seismic zones -- one between Yizhou and Liuzhou, and the other between Guilin and Nanning. According to the China Earthquake Networks Centre website, Liuzhou experienced at least four 2.2-magnitude earthquakes between Sunday and Monday noon. This as the State Council's earthquake relief headquarters announces it has activated the level 4 national earthquake emergency response, and has started to search the disaster zone as part of rescue operations.
