As Britain's Prime Minister Keir Starmer faces mounting pressure to step down, recently-resigned health secretary Wes Streeting has promised to stand if the ruling Labour Party's leadership race is triggered. Yet Streeting argued it wasn't in the party's interest or the national interest to force an immediate campaign.

He said, "Each generation used to leave this country better for the next, we still can. We used to have a health service that was the envy of the world, we still can. We used to believe that everyone deserve a home of their own, we still can. This country used to punch above its weight in the world and we still can."

Pointing to Labour's unprecedented local election fiasco, Streeting has pushed for a proper contest with the "best candidates on the field."

Streeting also warned that nationalists are "in power in every corner of the United Kingdom" for the first time in history and said the UK should seek to rejoin the European Union.

Streeting, who is said to have the backing of 81 MPs from the Labour Party to urge Starmer to quit, continued to call on the prime minister to set out a timetable for his departure.
