A British-operated cruise ship held off the French coast that reported an outbreak of gastrointestinal illness has been given clearance by authorities.

Earlier, a 92-year-old Briton on board died of a non-related cardiac arrest during the voyage.

Dozens suffered from upset stomachs on the ship "Ambition" which sailed from the Shetland Islands north of Scotland in early May.

After reaching Bordeaux in western France on Tuesday evening, more than 1,700 guests and crew members were initially held on the vessel for over 24 hours.

Around 80 people that showed symptoms consistent with acute digestive infection have been treated by the ship's doctor and remain in isolation in their cabins. Some asymptomatic passengers were disembarking on Wednesday.

Samples from the patients were tested at a local hospital to identify the pathogen and assess transmission risks.

The operator of "Ambition" said all shore excursions at Bordeaux had been canceled, adding affected passengers were given full refunds.
