After a weeklong trial, a jury in Brooklyn federal court finds a 64-year-old man from New York guilty of running a secret Chinese spy outpost. He faces up to 30 years in prison. Lu Jianwang, a US citizen for decades who also goes by the name Harry Lu, was accused of acting as an unregistered foreign agent while running a so-called "secret police station" at the behest of Beijing in Manhattan's Chinatown. Jurors were shown a banner that reads "Fuzhou Police Overseas Service Station." Prosecutors say he started out by helping Chinese nationals in the city renew their driver's licenses, which alone is a crime if not disclosed to the US government. They also allege Lu agreed to help the Chinese government locate a pro-democracy activist residing in California. Lu, arrested in April 2023, remains free on bail and awaits sentencing. Calling the charges "fabricated" and part of an effort to smear its image, Beijing says there are centres around the world that are run by local volunteers to help Chinese nationals with paperwork and other issues.
