President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump jointly visit the Temple of Heaven in the nation's capital early this afternoon.

President Xi says the Communist Party of China inherited the people-oriented tradition long adhered to by Chinese civilisation, and is dedicated to serving the nation's citizens.

The US president, meanwhile, notes both countries should deepen mutual understanding and foster friendlier people-to-people relations.

At the Temple of Heaven in Beijing, President Xi Jinping awaits the arrival of US President Donald Trump as the pair were set to visit the world famous landmark.

The two leaders proceed to walk towards the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests for a photo.

Great place -- incredible. China is beautiful.

The two presidents enter the temple where President Xi introduces Trump to the temple built in 1420 during the Ming dynasty.

The temple was regularly visited by emperors of both the Ming and Qing dynasties who prayed for the nation's prosperous harvests.

This as the Xinhua News Agency says the two leaders had mutual admiration for the historical landmark and in particular its architectural intricacies.

President Xi notes the ancient leaders of China would hold large-scale ceremonies at the temple to pray for peace and stability in the nation.

He adds the Communist Party of China upholds the traditions of Chinese civilisation and its people-oriented ideology, stressing the government is dedicated to serving the people.

The US president says both the US and China are great countries with equally great people full of wisdom.

He emphasises both nations should deepen mutual understanding and foster friendlier people-to-people ties.

Outside the temple's northern gate, crowds of residents prepare telescopes in hopes of catching a glimpse of the two world leaders.

A man says he hopes the joint visit can bring about peace and stability between the two nations -- ideals that former leaders of China prayed for at the temple.

While this man says the temple symbolises Chinese cultural heritage, which is championed by President Xi.

He believes the peoples of China and the West can view each other as equals, without viewing one culture as superior to the other.

Trump first visited China as US president nine years ago, when President Xi brought him on a visit to the Forbidden City.

There, the pair enjoyed tea at the palace's only Western-style pavilion.
