CUHK found drug mimicking hormone secretion of gut and brain to improve recovery of severe stroke patients

Research from the Chinese University's Faculty of Medicine found a drug that mimics the natural hormone secretion of the gut and brain can improve the recovery of patients with severe stroke.
GLP-1RA, a drug often used to treat diabetes and obesity, has been found by the CUHK team to also produce extensive molecular changes in organs such as the brain and heart, protecting brain health and delaying ageing.
The team conducted a clinical trial on 140 stroke patients with severe large vessel blockage.
The proportion of patients receiving the new therapy who showed good recovery in neurological function was about 20 percent higher than the standard treatment group.
