A former Hong Kong University of Science and Technology professor pleaded guilty to accepting a bribe of 40,000 dollars and offering red packets to colleagues. The sentencing is adjourned to May 28th.

The offences took place between March and May 2025. During that period, 63-year-old Liu Hongbin was the programme director of the master of science in Environmental health and safety programme. He was responsible for reviewing applications and interviewing applicants for the degree.

Liu admitted that he had received a request from a friend about a student who wished to enter the programme. Liu instructed a lecturer to arrange an interview for the student and recommended the student's admission.

He later accepted a bribe of 40,000 dollars from his friend after the student had secured a conditional offer. Meanwhile, Liu offered the lecturer and another staff responsible for admission matters two red packets containing 5,000 and 1,000 dollars, respectively.

The two staff members rejected the red packets and reported the matter to the university.
