The government on Wednesday said a 50 percent toll wavier for all commercial vehicles will take effect from Sunday. The measure will last for two months until July 16th. Fuel prices remain high amid the Middle East conflicts. To help commercial drivers and operators cope with the financial burden arising from rising energy prices, the government said vehicles, including taxis, buses and light buses, will receive a 50 percent toll waiver when using tolled tunnels and the Tsing Sha Control Area. Under the two-month measure, taxis drivers will need to pay a toll fee of 12.5 dollars instead of 25. Other commercial vehicles will pay 25 dollars. Tsing Sha Control Area's toll fee for all commercial vehicles, meanwhile, will drop to 4 dollars. Some taxi drivers said the waiver would help them a bit. "The wavier can save me more than 10 dollars if I use the tunnels two or three times (a day)," he said. But others said the measure would be "fairly pointless." "I think a more effective way is to reduce the fuel prices," the driver said. But the measure doesn't cover taxi passengers, meaning residents must continue to pay the statutory toll fee in full during the waiver period.
