Thailand's former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra was released from a Bangkok prison on Monday, after serving 8 months of a one-year sentence for a corruption-related charge. The release of the controversial former leader attracted about 300 supporters and allies who gathered outside the Klong Prem Prison to greet the 76-year-old. His three children, including another former Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and other family members also arrived early to welcome him. Thaksin smiled brightly as he walked around to greet his supporters, who chanted "we love Thanksin". Thaksin's political machine staged several comebacks after he was ousted as leader in 2006, but Thaksin himself stayed mostly in exile to escape what he claimed was political persecution.
