The Civil Engineering and Development Department on Monday said it would enhance slope management against critical weather conditions using new technology.

The city recorded 257 landslide cases last year. But landslides can be prevented under sufficient monitoring and management work.

Developed by CEDD, this smart drone management platform, or "SmartAERO," allows the department to monitor local slopes' conditions from a long distance, as well as deploy drones to emergency spots. Authorities have so far launched a pilot trial in four flooding black spots: Wong Tai Sin, Chai Wan, Tseung Kwan O and Sai Ying Pun.

Separately, CEDD will introduce an AI-based landslip warning system this year. Speaking to the media on Monday, the department says the system's accuracy rate of forecasting landslides could reach 90 percent.

Lawrence Shum, Deputy Head of the Geotechnical Engineering Office (Island), said,"The precipitation model has become different. We draw reference from the previous patterns of precipitation and trends. That's why AI is a good tool -- AI can learn. AI can learn about the risks of landslides or five black rainstorm warning signals running. When we have the figures or when we have the distribution of the model then we can further train our AI model."

Another focus of CEDD this year is shoreline management, which authorities have published guidelines in hopes of reducing the impacts of storm surges.
