In the wake of the Labour Party's crushing local election defeat in the UK, a lawmaker and former minister has promised to challenge Prime Minister Keir Starmer for the top job if no senior member of Downing Street steps forward.

Labour backbencher Catherine West told BBC she wants the cabinet to work out a plan for Starmer's departure tomorrow or she will put her name forward to stand for leadership.

On Saturday, Starmer appointed former prime minister Gordon Brown and ex-deputy Labour leader Harriet Harman as advisors in a bid to shore up his position in the party.

Labour suffered a loss of more than 1,100 local council seats across England this year. Starmer insists he would not walk away and "plunge the country into chaos" notwithstanding.

He still has support from several cabinet ministers who indicated Friday that an immediate challenge from the potential leadership rivals is uncertain.
