Hungary's new Prime Minister Peter Magyar hails it a 'wonderful day' in an address to crowd following his inauguration Saturday.

His party's victory in a landslide election win marks the end to his predecessor Viktor Orban's 16-year rule.

Magyar commends the crowd for their efforts in pushing back against "the most vicious tyranny."

Thousands gather in a square cheering and waving their nation's red, white and green flag as the newly-elected Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar emerges from the parliament building.

"Today, every freedom-loving person in the world wants to be a little Hungarian," he says after taking oath of office.

Magyar's party, the centre-right Tisza defeated Viktor Orban's nationalist-populist Fidesz party in a stunning two-thirds sweep last month, gaining more votes than any other party in the country's post-communist history.

As part of his campaign promise, Magyar vows to restore democratic institutions and governmental checks and balances that were heavily eroded and address alleged corruption during his predecessor's 16-year rule.

"We must understand, however, that there can be no new beginning without reconciliation. There can be no reconciliation without justice. And there can be no justice without confronting the past," he says.

Also for the first time since 2014, the EU flag flies alongside the national flag in parliament, this signalling the first step towards Magyar's promise to repair his country's ties with the EU.
