A cache of military-grade weapon has been uncovered by Thai police inside the home of a Chinese national, a 31-year-old man who lives in Pattaya on a long-term visa.

Authorities are investing the origin of the arms and the man's motive.

The incident was uncovered when police were called to the scene after the man's vehicle rolled over on a highway.

Inside the car, police found a gun and loaded magazines, which led to a search of the man's home near Pattaya.

There, police discovered an arsenal of weaponry including two M16-rifles, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, Russian landmines, projectiles, 80 litres of gasoline and close to 5kg of C4 explosives.

Several Thai nationals suspected of procuring the weapons have been brought in for questioning, local media reports.

The arrested man claims to suffer from depression and the police say they're investigating whether the man was planning a suicide attack.
